Cooper Street Hotel Could Become Student Housing Complex
A downtown Ottawa hotel could be turned into student housing, as Campus Suites Inc. and Holiday Inn and Suites finalize the sale of the building on Cooper Street. The hotel at 111 Cooper Street, between Cartier Street and Queen Elizabeth Drive, currently boasts about 220 units.
If the sale is finalized, Campus Suites president Henry Morton says, the company plans to enhance the building to create extended stay apartments catering to students. A coffee shop run by a third party is part of the plan, along with an upgraded fitness area and laundry facilities. The apartments would also feature new meeting areas.
Morton rejects the claim that residents nearby would be bothered by the student population. “We intend on having on-site management 24 hours a day, we’ve understood the market very well, we’ve understood what a lot of the needs are of the students and the propensity of them to engage in a variety of activities that need management,” Morton said.
