Hotel Conversion Part of Ottawa’s Growing Student Housing
A hallway door separates the beige hotel walls from the trendy orange, brown and teal motif of Ottawa’s newest privately-run student residence.
Henry Morton points out the obvious changes on the ninth floor of the old Holiday Inn on Cooper St. On one side of the door, a typical hotel c corridor is now a work site where contractors are making the switch. The other side the door has new carpet, paint and funky fixtures, with doors leading to rooms staged for prospective student renters.
Morton is the president of Campus Suites, which acquired the building after a simple cold call to the hotel chain and a reading of the Ottawa student housing market.
“Part of our business is understanding who we’re dealing with,” Morton says in the new lobby, which, with its bright colours and new walls, looks nothing like the former hotel entrance.
